Frozen Moments

Frozen moments are intense, unresolved memories linked to traumatic events that become “frozen” in our bodies and minds, especially when the loss was sudden or unexpected. When trauma is unresolved, sensory details from that moment—sights, sounds, smells—can become external cues to the memories of these experiences, creating frozen moments in time. This often interferes with our ability to remember the good in our relationship after the loss. Moving beyond frozen moments allows us to reclaim love, goodness, and positive memories as part of our ongoing relationship.

Techniques to Release Frozen Moments

Sharing the Details. Sharing the specific sensory details of the traumatic memory, and the connected feelings to them, can start the process of releasing its hold.

Connect Through Momentos. Bring a Momento that reminds you of your loved one. Use this as a focal point while you reflect on your relationship with them beyond the trauma. Let it evoke their presence and energy, allowing yourself to feel their positive qualities.

Claim the Gifts of Their Presence. Reflect on and express the qualities, strengths, and love your loved one brought into your life. Express in the positive memories and gifts they left with you. Bringing these qualities into your present life helps sustain the relationship and fosters healing.

Dialogue, Letter Writing, or Guided Imagery. Use one of these methods to express yourself with your loved one. Let yourself say what feels undelivered or unresolved, and imagine their responses.

Listing Positive and Negative Qualities. Make a list of all the qualities—both positive and challenging—that you remember about your loved one. Write down your feelings, thoughts, and judgments about them. Next, Identify the qualities you want to keep as part of your life. Notice how these qualities help you move beyond the trauma, transforming the memory into something that feels more complete and balanced.

Frozen Moments to Positive Memories

By shifting focus from the traumatic memory to the love, beauty, and goodness of the relationship, we begin to reclaim the full essence of the connection in the present. While the physical absence of our loved one remains, the relationship endures, offering strength and support as we build a new normal. Frozen moments are powerful memories, but they do not have to define our relationship with our loved one. Honor your journey as you work through these memories, knowing that the bonds of love and memory are yours to carry forward.
